This is the flyer for Lilly Through the Dark by The River People from 2010. It was the first non-Punch-and-Judy puppet show that I ever saw and the production that made me realise just how amazing puppetry could be.
The memory of this show has stuck with me for years and years and I'm sure it’ll continue to inform my work for a long time. The show contained a number of styles of puppetry including Bunraku, object theatre and shadow and rod puppets. I was lucky enough to do a workshop with one of the cast a year later on object manipulation and rod puppetry and she brought along the Lilly puppet herself for us to work with – that would be my first look at puppet mechanisms.
I only saw Lilly Through the Dark by accident (I had tickets for a different show) but it truly changed the course of my life in a completely unexpected and wonderful way.
